FEATURES
A purist format converter
No compressing, no cropping — just turning "formats that won't open" into "formats that open everywhere".
7 in, 4 out
Reads JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, BMP, GIF and ICO; writes the four modern formats: JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF.
Real batch processing
Drop a whole folder, keep adding files mid-run — everything queues up and gets converted, nothing left behind.
Local conversion
Decoding and encoding run in your browser via WebAssembly. Images never touch a server — sensitive screenshots included.
Professional encoders
MozJPEG, libwebp and libavif — the same engines Squoosh uses, so output quality holds up.
Adjustable quality
Dial quality for JPG/WebP/AVIF output; PNG is encoded losslessly, pixel-identical to the source.
ZIP packaging
Downloading one by one is tedious — grab everything as a single ZIP, or save files individually.
When you need it
"Incompatible format" comes up even more often than "file too large" — you've probably hit these.
Downloaded image won't open
WebP / AVIF files saved from the web confuse Windows Photo Viewer, WeChat and some office apps — convert to JPG once and move on.
Legacy software wants JPG/PNG
Slideshows, print shops and some upload forms still only accept traditional formats — convert before submitting.
Screenshots bloated as PNG
BMP screenshots and losslessly exported PNG assets convert to lightweight JPG/WebP instantly (for compression, use the compressor tool).
Archiving old assets
Normalize the .bmp and .ico files on your drive to PNG: smaller, and previewable on any device.
Convert in three steps
Import images
Drag & drop, click to browse, add a folder or paste with Ctrl+V — dozens of files at once.
Pick the target format
JPG / PNG / WebP / AVIF; "Auto" handles each file intelligently by its original format.
Download results
Save individually or as one ZIP. File names stay the same — only the extension changes.
A few things worth knowing about conversion
Good to know before you convert.
Does converting lose quality?
Depends on direction. Anything to PNG is lossless (pixel-identical). To JPG/WebP/AVIF is lossy encoding — at the default 85% quality the difference is virtually invisible. But lossy → lossy (e.g. JPG to WebP) stacks a slight second loss; for quality-critical assets convert to PNG or re-export from the original file.
Why did my JPG get bigger after converting to PNG?
PNG is lossless — it must faithfully record every pixel. JPG is small because compression threw away detail the eye barely notices; that detail is gone for good, so PNG just stores the remaining pixels as-is, which usually means several times the size. Converting the format doesn't convert the quality.
What happens to animated GIFs?
A GIF input takes its first frame only — the output is a static image. Multi-frame animation needs a dedicated pipeline (full-frame decoding, palette quantization, per-frame encoding) beyond this tool's scope. For shrinking animations, GIF → animated WebP is the right direction — a job for a dedicated tool.
Does EXIF data survive conversion?
No. Re-encoding rebuilds the image data, so EXIF metadata (camera settings, GPS location, device model) is not carried over. For privacy-sensitive images that's actually a bonus — you get metadata scrubbing for free.
Why can ICO be an input but not an output?
ICO is a Windows icon container that usually packs several bitmap sizes. Browsers can read it (extracting the image inside), but there's no native ICO encoder, and hand-building ICO headers and multi-size directories is way out of proportion. For favicons use a dedicated favicon generator.
Input formats at a glance
How each input is decoded and where it should go.
| Input | Decoding | Recommended output | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPG / JPEG | MozJPEG decoder | WebP, PNG | Photos to WebP save another 25-35% |
| PNG | Standard decode + OxiPNG | WebP, JPG | Without transparency, JPG/WebP is the better deal |
| WebP | libwebp decoder | JPG, PNG | The standard fix for apps that reject WebP |
| AVIF | libavif decoder | JPG, PNG | JPG is the compatibility fallback of choice |
| BMP | Native browser decoding | PNG, WebP | Uncompressed bitmap — file size collapses after conversion |
| GIF | Native browser decoding | PNG, WebP | Animations take the first frame only |
| ICO | Native browser decoding | PNG | Multi-size icon container; the image inside is extracted |
Compared with other converters
With equal capability, the difference usually comes down to "do images get uploaded" and "can you batch".
| Tool | Upload needed | Batch | Free tier | Output formats |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| This tool | No, fully local | Folder-level | Unlimited | JPG / PNG / WebP / AVIF |
| CloudConvert | Yes | Yes | 25 / day | 300+ formats |
| Convertio | Yes | Yes | 100MB / day | 300+ formats |
| Squoosh | No, fully local | Single file | Unlimited | JPG / PNG / WebP / AVIF |

FAQ
Which input formats are supported?
JPG/JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, BMP, GIF and ICO. Formats that browsers decode unreliably or that are semantically special — TIFF, HEIC, SVG — are not supported yet.
Are images uploaded to a server?
No. Decoding and encoding happen entirely in your browser via WebAssembly — once the page is loaded, the tool even works offline.
How many images can I convert at once?
No hard cap — the queue processes files one by one. Browser memory is the practical limit, so keep batches to a few hundred files; single files are capped at 30MB.
Can it output ICO or SVG?
No. ICO is a Windows-specific multi-size icon container and SVG is a vector description language — neither suits in-browser batch generation. For favicons use a dedicated favicon generator.
Do file names change after conversion?
Only the extension changes — photo.webp becomes photo.jpg. Inside a ZIP, name collisions get an automatic numeric suffix.
